N.E.C.C.A.: A WALKING EXPERIENTIAL THEATRICAL EVENT
& EDUCATIONAL GAME
The 32nd European Bird Festival officially started on Sunday, October 6, 2024. At the European level, most events took place on the weekend of October 5 & 6, 2024. In our country, just like every year, Bird Festivals were held throughout October with the support of the Hellenic Ornithological Society. We were particularly pleased to participate in the celebrations organized on Sunday, October 6, by the Management Unit of Protected Areas of Epirus - Organization of Natural Environment & Climate Change (N.E.C.C.A.) on the Island of Lake Pamvotida in Ioannina.
Specifically, at 10:30 in the morning, two boats departed from the point where the boats departed from Ioannina. We were at the island's dock welcoming the participants and, together, embarked on our exciting journey. A guided tour at the Lake Pamvotida Observation Center preceded the activity.
Immediately after, an experiential theatrical event titled "The Birds of Lake Pamvotis" took place, inspired by Christina Tzialla's adaptation of Aristophanes' play 'The Birds,' which also served as as the facilitator for the action. The presentation's curation, handcrafted creations, and costumes are authored by Vasiliki Kateri.
This was followed by an educational game aimed at discovering hidden images of migratory birds in the bushes along the route around the island. Specialized staff members from the organization were present to provide detailed information about each bird that the children discovered in the images.
The participants were provided with an observation form where they could record the birds they saw live in front of them during their walk around the island. Binoculars were also available for participants to use to better observe the birds of the lake. Our activity concluded with a board game, which required the knowledge that the children had gained from the entire experience.
As part of the broader festive events for the European Bird Festival, our aim was to convey the message of how important it is to protect the areas where migratory birds nested and bred. Our goal was to inform and raise awareness among the public about the need to protect migratory birds, as well as their breeding areas, the intermediate stops along their migratory routes, and their wintering sites.

The Ηoopoe-Christina narrates a story, an adaptation of Aristophanes' work "Birds." Just as in Aristophanes' original play, the hoopoe plays a significant role here as well, acting as a representative figure of nature and freedom.
